Our neighbor down south really beat us this time. FIA gave Singapore the green light to host the first ever night F1 race. The idea of having a night F1 race bounced around back in the 2000 or the 2001 season. At that time it was planned to be held at Sepang. Didn’t really know why it didn’t came to fruition though.
Having a night race brings a new level of excitement to F1. Imagine being able to see the heat glow from the brake discs!
The lighting setup itself is impressive and custom made by lighting specialists Valerio Maioli S.p.a. of Ravenna, Italy, it minimizes glare and reflections from a wet surface or spray from cars by using lighting projectors strategically positioned on one side of the track.
The entire street track (first of its kind in Asia) will be fitted with nearly 1500 lighting projectors and powered by twelve twin-power generators. An overall average of about 3000lux levels is required to illuminate the circuit, which is enough to meet high definition television broadcast standards. As a result, the track will be almost four times brighter than a typical stadium.
The lights will be brought to Singapore in early January for testing in a controlled environment similar to conditions expected on raceday. Valerio Maioli SpA estimates that setting up the entire system will take two to three months.

On 12 May 2007, Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel) and Charley Boorman (Charley who? obscure movies; The Bunker, The Serpent Kiss) set off on a 15,000 mile motorcycle trip from John O’Groats, Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa. Their journey was shown in 6 one hour episode TV series aired on BBC 2. Long Way Down is a follow up to Long Way Round when they rode their bike from London to the USA. On both of Long Way Down and Long Way Round they are accompanied by a third rider and cameraman, Claudio Von Planta
They rode BMWs on both of the trip, R1150 GS Adventure on Long Way Round and R1120 GS Adventure on Long Way Down.
